A single PRE studbook for the entire world

There is only a single registration which is authorized, internationally to produce the official documentation for PRE horses. This is the one and only guarantee for breed purity and which applies the internationally accepted controls for the breed and a breed selection scheme:

  • DNA typing of individual horses
  • parentage verification of each horse, completed graphic description and microchipping of foals
  • evaluation as breeding stock as a 3-year old
  • assignment of a reigstration code in the studbook

The passport produced by the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture and LG ANCCE is the only documentation that guarantees that the animal is a Purebred Spanish Horse and it fulfills all the requirements for the identification of equines as established by the European Union.

Permitted Colours of the PRE Horse:

According to the breed description in the PRE studbook, all colours are permitted except piebald and skewbald.

Artificial Insemination:

This is currently only permitted in the case of qualified breeding stock.

Aptitud/approval for breeding:

Three classes of breeding stock exist within the PRE horse selection scheme:

Basic breeding stock (Aptitud basica)

It is necessary to request the evaluation from LG ANCCE. PRE horses undergo this evaluation, during which it is decided if they are suitable for breeding, as of the age of three, and the requirements are:

  • stallion must have a minimum height of 152cm at hte withers - mares a min. of 150cm at the withers.
  • there must be no sign of a fallen or broken crest or a Ewe neck.
  • they must be neither monorchide nor cryptorchide
  • they must remain tru to the breed type

    Horse Passports

What is a horse passport? Who issues passports?

The document a PRE horse will receive upon successful registration in the Spanish Studbook is called a horse passport.

Since January 2007 the administration of the Spanish Studbook has been changed from the previous Ministry of Defense - Horse Breeding Section (FESCCR or Cria Caballar) to a private breeders organisation called ANCCE (Asociacion Nacional de Criadores de Caballos Espanoles). ANCCE has established a separate branch to deal with all matters containing with the management of the PRE studbook. This is called LG ANCCE (LG stands for Libro Genealogico which means Studbook).

Horse passports were first introduced into European Union countries as a measure to control horse movement, disease spread and for medication control (in Europe horses still enter the human food chain). In all European Union member countries, all horses have to be registered with a central database by a specified age and be issued with a passport. No horse is allowed to travel without its passport and all vaccinations and certain tests for diseases have to be entered into the passport as part of the horses health status declaration.

In NZ, all PRE horse, that is all horses registered with Spain via ACPRE NZ Inc, will have a passport. Since NZ joined the worldwide PRE studbook in 2000, there are 2 types of passports currently in circulation.

What is revision? How is a horse entered into the Spanish Studbook as a PRE horse?

The Spanish Studbook is a "closed" studbook, which means that only offspring of parents previously registered, are eligible to be entered into this studbook. No horse from any other breed can be classified for inclusion (as is done with some warmblood studbooks, where TB mares can become foundation mares if considered of high enough quality and usually after they have passed some form of classification test).

Revision is the collective term to describe the process that determines if a horse is to be registered into the Spanish Studbook and ultimately be eligible for breeding PRE horses. There are two parts to this process, the first being "inscription" and the second is called "valoration". (The latter can also be called "grading" in some countries).
